History

A valuable background

In 1966, three American families realized a dream: offering an American school in Genoa. Today ISG reflects and respects its history and long journey, by offering a complete international educational program in English.

1966 - Foundation

In 1966 three American gentleman, Mr. Roland Muri, Mr. Robert Carhart and Mr. William Prey founded The American School of Genoa, a private co-educational day school created to serve the needs of the American community in Genoa, “by promoting scholastic systems and programs in use in the United States”.

1981

Mr. Frederick A. Richards obtained from the Italian Ministry of Education the authorization to run a school in English named The American International School, based on the American curriculum. The school officially started its educational services as a foreign school in an apartment in Via Carrara in Genova Quarto. The school had less then 50 students.

1990's

In the following decades, the school grew and moved to the site of Priaruggia, few minutes away from the sea and the historic site from where Giuseppe Garibaldi, a hero of Italian unification, led his soldiers to unify Italy in 1860. At this site, the school offered early childhood, elementary and middle school education. The inclusive approach of the school was already there: the management of the school also decided to modify the name adding “international” because the school community included more and more different nationalities and it felt right to recognize this as a value.

2000

The opportunities offered by the IB Diploma programme became more popular and attractive, in particular for the local Genoese community: The American International School of Genoa was perceived by more people as a great opportunity to offer an international education and and to increase the possibility of international universities for their students. The school board approved the opening of the high school and AISG requested authorization by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer its IB Diploma Programme. In 2002, the school obtained authorization as an IBDP school (IBO - www.ibo.org).

2004

In June 2004 ISG celebrated its first graduating class. Students, teachers, and parents who experienced those years were aware that they were part of a greater family; enthusiastic about the growth and changes within the school. Their children could benefit from an international education in Genoa.

2007

Given the increased interest for the school and the lack of space, in 2007, the Board of Directors proposed to the associates to move the school to a new prestigious campus located only a kilometer away from the sea. This was an opportunity for the school to continue to grow and flourish. In the same year, the school changed its name to The International School in Genoa (ISG).

2007-ok

2009

In September 2009, at the end of a incredible renovation journey, the new campus in Via Romana della Castagna was opened to 280 students coming from the international and local community of Genoa. SInce then, the school has continued to grow in terms of its educational programs, space, and number of students.
